Revolutionizing plastic and paper packaging

Taking Sappi towards a sustainable strategy
and a portfolio of new products

Ambitions of
sustainable growth

Over a long-term partnership, Board of Innovation and Sappi came together to become one. We researched what their current and potential clients really wanted, and pushed Sappi to consider what they could offer the world. Then, it was time to test out ideas and solutions that would unlock Sappi’s ambition.

Sappi dreamed of moving into sustainable materials for a variety of applications, and we believed in them. The result was Symbio, a wood-based alternative to standard plastic components. Its versatility and sustainability means it has the potential to change production chains across industries, including automotive interiors, consumer electronics, and food packaging.

The materials that
make the future

Sappi soon launched a new portfolio of sustainable food packaging. Knowing normal paper wouldn’t cut it, together we developed a portfolio of coated paper-based wrappers with the ability to preserve all types of foods. As a result, Guard, Sappi’s award-winning packaging, could replace plastic forever.

With our help, Sappi successfully evolved from a paper production company to a manufacturer of sustainable materials. With Symbio recognized by companies such as Fiat, Sappi are on a mission to ultimately change large mass-producers’ approach towards plastic.

Likewise, Guard has landed collaborations with global CPG/FMCG market leaders such as Tony Chocolonely and Nestlé, meaning Sappi are driving the fight to replace plastic food packaging for good.
