The Japanese HQ of Toyota has a dedicated foresight unit to map out long term future scenarios. This is an essential component in defining a strategy for the decade ahead. They rely heavily on inputs from the different regions. Together with the European HQ and their foresight team, Board of Innovation took on the challenge to document a wide spectrum of shifts and scenarios that could impact the European market and Mobility in specific.

Solution

Report: the impact and opportunities in Mobility

The study and strategic recommendations encompassed both the direct and indirect consequences on Mobility and beyond, including:

  1. The current state of European consumer behavior and how it links to local cultural differences, norms, and values. The contrast between nations is hard to understand for outsiders. 
  2. Future scenarios (short term, 2-5 years) that are mainly extensions of current ongoing changes (e.g. car free cities, rising nordic role model, new egaliterism, etc.) 
  3. More explorative and controversial, long term scenarios (e.g. impact virtual worlds, village pods, specific climate mitigation shifts)

A structured process to gather insights about the future. During several months, research sprints were mixed with challenging sessions. External experts where involved to collect constructive feedback (e.g. related to European politics & regulations.)
