Toyota’s Japanese HQ has a foresight unit dedicated to mapping out long-term future scenarios. This is an essential component in defining their strategy for the decade ahead. To build it, they rely heavily on input from the different regions in which Toyota operates. Together with the European HQ and their foresight team, Board of Innovation took on the challenge of documenting a broad spectrum of shifts and scenarios that could impact the European market, namely in mobility.

A report on future trends and the opportunities in mobility for Toyota

We collaborated with Toyota’s team to develop strategic recommendations based on future trends in the mobility industry and beyond. Over several months, we helped to conduct research sprints and challenge sessions. In addition, external experts were engaged to collect constructive feedback related to European politics, regulations, etc.  The resulting report included:

  1. The current state of European consumer behavior and how it links to local cultural differences, norms, and values (the contrast between nations can be difficult for outsiders to understand). 
  2. Future scenarios (in the short term – 2-5 years) that are mainly extensions of current ongoing changes (such as car-free cities, the Nordic model, new egalitarianism, etc.) 
  3. More explorative and controversial long-term scenarios (such as virtual worlds, village pods, and specific climate mitigation shifts).
