Incubating Fresh Business Ideas with Novo Nordisk

Incubating fresh business ideas through a global talent program.

Board of Innovation teamed up with Novo Nordisk, the leading life-science company specialized in diabetes and obesity, to set up a talent program focused on incubating new business ideas.

Challenge

Mining the talent pool for fresh business strategies

Novo Nordisk is the leading life-science company specialized in diabetes and obesity. When Novo Nordisk set their sights on enhancing the intrapreneurial skillset of over 100 of its most talented employees, they called on Board of Innovation.

We helped them to create fresh new business ideas by setting up a talent program, and putting this diverse and global talent pool to work on the corporate strategy of “Bending the curve in diabetes (through prevention)”.

Approach

Crash course: Design Thinking as a transformational accelerating talent to drive new ideas

We joined forces with the company’s People & Organization department to design the infrastructure to support the Intrapreneur Journey. That 6-month long in-house talent development program was modelled on an innovation accelerator.

First, we launched a challenge in which participants explored sustainable interventions to prevent obesity through healthy eating. Then, we designed learning modules and workshops to gain consumer insights while also developing ideas and business models.

Throughout this process, we coached participants to challenge those ideas and models. At the same time, we empowered the in-house Novo Nordisk team to independently deliver webinars and workshops, to enable them to build their internal capabilities. Today, our experts are still involved in the business model definition stage, injecting their expertise into the most value-added parts of the process.

Through our collaboration with Board of Innovation, we benefitted from their expertise in developing intrapreneur competencies among our talents, while solving real life business challenges

Results

Happy stakeholders across the board

So, what did we achieve in the end? Well, the program led to over 100 participants being trained, across five cohorts worldwide (EMEA, APAC, Americas). Twenty-five business ideas got pitched to senior management.

It’s safe to say that all stakeholders across the board (management, trainees…) where satisfied with the outcome and process.

But wait, there’s more: the program will continue in 2021, focused on different business challenges, and will again include five to six cohorts.
