How we explore new business concepts
Board Of Innovation gives you a taste of what experimental business concepts could mean for your organization.
A new view on innovation
15 years ago industries were characterized by one dominant business model, like CD sales in music. Now more and more companies are competing with different (open) business models within one industry. Also in other industries like Automotive, Telecom, Media, Banking, Airlines. While 99% of all efforts and tools are still focused on product innovation, it is our aim to broaden the scope with new tools in service and business model innovation.
Business concepts: zooming in and out
Board Of Innovation visually maps business concepts using 10 building blocks. By comprising all elements of a business model, innovation exercises start at system level allowing you to zoom into all specific aspects for ideation – including new products, services, payment methods, partnerships and distribution channels. The iPhone or RyanAir for example bundle innovations on nearly all of the above.

Browse global database
The heart of our platform brings together new innovative concepts and creative ideas. Continuously fed by trend platforms, rss feeds and Board Of Innovation network members, new concepts are often found in new media, mobile and the broad internet industry. OLPC, Twitter and YouTube are striking examples. All ideas are visually stored in our database so they can be used as a source for inspiration! Follow our RSS for the latest concepts.
Visualize your model
Both start-ups and corporates are using our 10 building block model to visualise their business concepts. Without going straight into financial figures or dry descriptive, a visual model significantly improves comparability and ease of communication. You can use the presentation template or the cut-and-paste pdf version. Use all the elements to draw any business model and feel free to share and compare it on slideshare or flickr (tag: bconcept)!
Watch new competitors & customers
As all industries from banking to automotive are challenged by unexpected newcomers, it is important to continuously monitor competitors AND customers. Utilising the illustrated transaction matrix, you systematically run over all the possible transactions in one sector and form an understanding of how others are developing new sustainable business systems. Today looking at companies is not enough though. End users and customers are becoming producers themselves by delivering products and services towards companies or towards each other. An example is an analysis to see what a travel agency could learn from new concepts as YokMok or Couchsurfing. Contact us about competition monitoring.
How to monetize
Start-ups and project teams in large companies are often working on very preliminary business models. Monetization is becoming a new area of focus, especially for a lot of social media start-ups without clear revenue model. Drag and drop the 10 building blocks to brainstorm on different monetization strategies. The standardized building blocks allow for comparison and adoption of powerful innovations from well-known success stories like eBay to hidden gems like Timebridge.
Ideation and business cases
Starting from a proper analysis – including current state, competition and fields of opportunity – workshops can generate up to 200 new business concepts. Filtered through specific selection matrixes, the best 3 to 5 ideas are developed into full business cases; rather than a nice-to-have trend and idea report. Business cases are backed with the necessary financial and economical figures, and describe a practical roadmap for implementation. Contact us about workshops.
