What happened during the 24 Hours of Innovation 2009

On Friday May 15 at exact 10am CET/4am EDT/1am PST we started a 24 Hour marathon of innovation projects around the world. During a full day and night 60+ participants presented their innovation initiatives, ranging from small innovation blogs up to large multinationals. Reviewing high quality presentations, facing technical challenges, judging a student challenge, live streaming brainstorms, receiving last minute contributions to be processed on the road… the 24h was a hectic, fun and interesting experience! In order to make sure that no qualitative contributions got lost in the rush, let’s have a look at what happened during the first edition of the 24 Hours of Innovation (2009).

The model of Addictlab and a branding exercise for South Africa

Within the presentation of Addictlab.com you could see some of the work they did for Diesel or TAO green tea. During their time slot founder Jan Van Mol also gave the kick off for their Branding exercise for South Africa by starting an online brainstorm on their own 24 Hours event page. You can still contribute by registering as a Lab member to send in more ideas.

Umicore on their innovation department and interesting vacancy

Marc Van Sande (EVP Advanced Materials & CTO) and Peter Rigby (Head of Department Innovation) both explained how Umicore continuously tries to innovate and how they are managing and organizing their departments to do so. As an illustration of this, Umicore presented a new vacancy for Project Manager Fine Particle Technology within the R&D department in Olen Belgium.

Idea Monopoly on non Technological innovation

Managing Director Sophie Racquez explains in her audio Slidecast how Idea Monopoly supports non-technological innovations. We went to their offices in Brussels to broadcast the kick off meeting for the Ideonaires contest, part of Innova 2009 . We participated in a brainstorm on unusual products and customer needs together with a group of students from the Institut superieur economique de Bruxelles.

Flanders District of Creativity explained us how they are supporting creativity and innovation in the Flemisch region in Belgium. Oklahoma Creativity (US) and Luova Tampere (Finland) also shared their views and opinions on building creative regions. We also asked them for regions they admire and for useful advice towards other organisations.

Materio’s innovative materials database


During one hour, visitors from the 24 Hours of Innovation gained free access to the online materials database of Materio. The database helps companies to find inspiration by browsing through all the samples of innovative materials. At Materio’s office in Design Center De Winkelhaak in Antwerp, we saw bulletproof ceramics and plastics with a smell for instance.

The City of Antwerp – Creative economy

The city of Antwerp supports local startups and growing organisations, and takes initiatives to drive innovation. The city presented itself as a pocketsize metropolis, a gateway to Europe with the 2nd largest port in Europe, the world’s diamond center, a city with 164 nationalities, unique educations and rich culture (f.e. fashion).

Ideavents on Open Innovation and ThinkTankThursday


Rob Veldt of ideavents brought an in-depth webinar on how to implement open innovation based on the OI Chess Paradigm. He presented a toolbox which provides a structured approach to transform organizations from closed to open, using leadership styles and organizational identity. After his open innovation talk, Rob introduced the ThinkTankThursday concept, a free concept of getting together, sharing ideas, involving outsiders, and inspiring each other.

Start-up Youpage.co.uk got reviewed




Founder Nigel Gay started with introducing Youpage as the internet’s local directory, helping people find local information, while helping local businesses and services reach their full online audience. A User Panel reviewed the startup providing comments and tips ranging from their first impression (“unsure what the site is for”) to their advice for improvement (“licensing technology”).

Start-ups featured thanks to PitchArena.com

A number of promising startups like Nimbuzz, Oxynade, wantz.it, Mynameise.com, Soocial, tweetag, and Respectance, presented their ventures in one minute pitches. The pitches were supported by Pitch Arena, a social networking event around Mobile Apps, Enterprise 2.0, the widgetized web, and the social web.

A case of Experience Co-Creation by Symnetics

Daniel Eggers and André Coutinho of Symnetics brought a compelling story around co-creating experiences and designing interactions. They spoke about Culture (Chicken) and Processes (Egg), defining an experience,  involving customers in an organization’s creation process, going from the traditional to the experience innovation taxonomy, and the practical case of the Brazilian Senai.

Sun Microsystems and how they support start-ups

Gregory Torfs presented Sun’s program to support young start-ups. During the day we also visited their offices near Brussels to see some of their technologies in action together with Alain Geenrits and Tom Maes, and see how Sun continuously tries to innovate. Their new approach on cloud computing looked very promising!

Visual Dimension presented at Ghent BC


During our innovation road trip we visited Ghent BC Business Café where Daniel Pletinckx, founder of Visual Dimension, presented his innovative 3D modelling projects in architecture and heritage. His free arc3D software makes it possible to instantly create 3D objects out of a series of 2D pictures. Download the package to try it out yourself.

Student Innovation Challenge between Belgium and US


A student team of UAMS Product Innovation & Entrepreneurship (Belgium) and a team of the California College of the Arts (US) participated in an innovation challenge: Music & Entertainment meets Automotive.  The challenge was to advance 3 new automotive concepts based on innovative business models from the pioneering Music & Entertainment industry. The students’ concepts were creative, thought through, and nicely presented. Have a look at Car Surfing, GM Access, Car Shuffle, GINA ReMix and other ideas!

Spigit’s innovation software in use at Pfizer


Pfizer presented a best practice video on how spigit enables them to tap into the creativity and ideas of their employees. “Ideas are not just sitting at headquarters.” They explained why they chose spigit, and how it is used within Pfizer. In an interview with Paul Plushkell, co-founder and CEO of spigit, we discussed how social networking tools can stimulate ideation within companies and provide intelligence for executive decisions.

Pantopicon gave us a look into the Future

By raising more questions than answers Nick Baerten, founder of Pantopicon, made us think of our near future. He compiled an inspiring movie and presented five teaser concepts that could be part of our future world. Imagine ‘the cloaker’, a product that can make us invisible, or ‘the sustapoints’ card, that will give tax reductions to the sustainable consumers amongst us.

Vodafone’s Betavine platform crowdsources mobile apps


We spoke with Stephen Wolak, Web Technologies Manager at Vodafone Group R&D. We spoke about Betavine, Vodafone’s open mobile application community. Stephen also explained their new project, Betavine Social Exchange (BSX), which is aimed at creating mobile solutions that bring social and economical benefits in local, emerging markets. Stay tuned.

Ami Kassar, founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Ideablob, explained how entrepreneurs and good ideas benefit from ideablob’s platform. A lot of materials had to be reworked and uploaded while being on the road from one organization to the other. The Business Model Innovation Award 2009 celebrated start-ups with an extraordinary business model tapping into the growing power of consumers and driving the evolution from advertising to exposure. Experimenting with new technologies and ways of interaction, it has also brought us useful lessons on which technologies and methods work better than others.
